The Friends of Garrett Island, Just Outside Perryville In Cecil County, Maryland
Our next Meeting is at the Perryville Town Hall and it will be will be on Monday, May 11th at 7 PM. 3 We held a river sweep of Garrett Island on Saturday, April 18, and located a lot of trash. Including a lot of styrofoam, flip flops, balls, propane canisters and tires, you name it; we probably found it. Many thanks to Chick-fil-A for a tasty lunch for each participant.
________________________________________________________________________ Garrett Island is a small treasure of an island in the Susquehanna River near Perryville, Maryland, which now with the exception of the River Sweep of Aptil 18th, is off limits to any who want to continue to enjoy its beauty. It also possesses the only beach in the Perryville area, which for years was popular for picnics, and it has trails that could be improved for the use of hikers, bird watchers, school groups and others. It is its status as part of the the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge that has placed it almost entirely off limits for now. Probable goals will be to make significant parts of the island available to the general public with safeguards for its natural beauty and the integrity of archaeological sites there.
Many thanks go out to Margaret Barrow for collecting many signatures on a petition to reopen the island to the people who appreciate it.
